Fu Chen Kung Fu was developed in 1968 by psychologist Dr. Stacey Shook. A teacher here in the Santa Ynez Valley, Dr. Shook taught many students, one of which, Tori Griggs, took over the Santa Ynez studio in 1978, while another, Bill Penca, went on to start his own school in Wisconsin.
Originally The Santa Ynez Cultural Center, the name was changed in 2004 by the third-generation and current owner, Melissa Coyner.
Fu Chen Kung Fu is an eclectic style with it's primary base in Five Animal Five Family Kung Fu. It is a combination of the arts Dr. Shook studied, and is distinguished by long arm movements and low stances, with an emphasis on self defense. It is considered a "traditional" martial art in that it takes years to progress through the system.
Philosophical and psychological concepts to aid the student in daily life are an integral part of the art. As with any art, it continues to evolve and grow with the individuals who become a part of it.
It is said that martial arts are 90% mental and 10% physical. Through dedicated practice (the meaning of 'kung fu') you gain insight into yourself; you discover your perceived limitations and learn the philosophical and psychological principles to help you deal with life and it's inevitable challenges.
Adults of all ages benefit from studying martial arts as well. Our kung fu classes have participants in their 60s. Many of our movements can be modified to accommodate each student's abilities.
Of course, adults (and teens!) benefit from the exercise, philosophical and psychological concepts, as well.
Classes typically include both groups drills (punches, parries, kicks, floor moves & forms), and partnered exercises, which use those moves in application. The instructor offers correction and affirmation to individual students during these exercises, and will adjust the lesson to help students improve their skill and understanding.
